The street is both a psychic and social space that does not necessarily involve a transaction. It is the space of the gaze—a form of presence, a crossing of paths—without necessarily involving a reciprocal or formal exchange. In other words, it is a third space without hierarchy or purpose. In some photos taken in Marrakech by Cédric Gatillon, the gaze of the people toward the camera sometimes indeed reveals a face-to-face moment, a fleeting acknowledgment of the presence of a man behind the lens.
